Florida Panther Jonathan Huberdeau has won the NHL trophy for rookie of the year. He beat out Montreal's Brendan Gallagher and Chicago's Brandon Saad.
Huberdeau told the Miami Herald "It was a surprise. There were two other guys who had great rookie years." He went on to say "I wasn't expecting anything. I'm pretty happy."
Huberdeau led the rookie scoring lead with 31 points and came in second on the Panthers. Huberdeau also became the first Panther to score on two penalty shots in one season. His 31 points are the most for a rookie in Panthers' history. Sidney Crosby has referred to Huberdeau as "a great young player with a lot of skill."
Huberdeau was one of only four Florida players to play in all 48 Panthers' games.
One of the first things Huberdeau bought when he got his first NHL paycheck was a new Ford Mustang Convertible. He says he will place the Calder Trophy in the back seat.
Huberdeau had to have hip surgery in the off-season. The Panthers think that Huberdeau should be fully healed for the beginning of training camp in September.
'The rehab is going well. I'm ahead of the process and am taking my time doing it properly," Huberdeau said. "We knew it was something that was bothering me during the season, but I had it checked out more thoroughly at the end. I made the decision to have surgery because I'm young. The rehab would be easier now than later" Huberdeau told the Miami Herald.
